Exploring Immersive Learning: Logistician Training

Advancing goods reception skills in VET education with logisticians and immersive 360° VR and evaluating 360° VR effectiveness for procedural learning.

Duration: March 2022 – December 2024
Status: Completed
Educational Level: Upper Secondary Level – Vocational Education
Topic: Digital Tools
Keywords: VR – Virtual Reality

Initial Situation

Immersive technologies offer new opportunities for teaching and learning in education. Technologies like virtual reality (VR) enable the creation of immersive learning spaces, where learners can fully immerse themselves. In a state of immersion, learners engage multiple senses and experience educational content in an immediate, up-close, and interactive way. In particular, 360° picture and video technologies are becoming increasingly popular for their immersive experiences and user-friendly nature, making them a promising tool for enhancing education.

Objectives

The focus of this research project is to incorporate interactive 360° videos into the training of logisticians, covering the processes of receiving, accepting, and storing goods. This is a complex and intricate topic that can easily profit from the affordances 360° VR offer to make it concrete and visible. The objective of this project is to develop an interactive 360° VR learning and assessment environment. This immersive environment is intended to facilitate comprehension of the incoming goods process by employing interactive scenarios, which permit self-directed learning and competency assessments. The latter are designed to prepare trainees for the specific challenges they will encounter in the industry. The project encompasses an investigation of the potential of 360° VR for learning and for evaluating acquired subject-specific knowledge, as well as an analysis of influencing factors.

Method

The initial phase of the project involves the creation of a comprehensive 360° VR learning and assessment environment in collaboration with educators and other stakeholders from the Bildungszentrum Limmattal, with the objective of integrating the produced enviroment into the training of logistics specialists. The prototype is ready.

Results

A preliminary intervention study is planned to be designed and implemented in early 2026 within the context of training logistics specialists. The data obtained from this study will provide insights into the efficacy of learning and the feasibility of assessments in virtual environments.

Implemented Translation

Teachers and trainers from the Bildungszentrum Limmattal participated in the project since its beginning, assuring implemented translation over the whole project phases. Due to some constraints, the implementation has been postponed to the beginning of 2026
