Graduate School Digitality and Education (GSDE)

The GSDE is an interdisciplinary doctoral programme at the interface of technology, education, and didactics.

Graduate School Digitality and Education

The Graduate School Digitality and Education (GSDE) is a joint interdisciplinary doctoral programme offered by the University of Bern, the University of Teacher Education PHBern, and the Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH, coordinated by BeLEARN. It provides a structured and practice-oriented supplementary training for doctoral students from all faculties of the University of Bern who wish to critically explore and actively shape the profound changes brought about by digitalisation in teaching and knowledge transfer.

Redesigning Teaching and Learning Methods at the Centre

In addition to technical areas such as the development of digital learning tools and the application of artificial intelligence, the GSDE places particular emphasis on the cultural and social changes in the education sector caused by digital transformation. Topics such as digital collaboration, new roles in the teaching and learning process, ethical issues surrounding digitisation, and the fundamental redesign of teaching and learning methods are at the heart of the programme. These focal points enable the GSDE and the participating universities to actively respond to current and future challenges in the digital education landscape, critically reflect on them, and develop new solutions.

Leading Centre for Digital Education Research

By pooling the expertise of the participating universities, the GSDE positions itself as a leading centre for digital education research, which not only addresses the implementation of new tools, but also fundamentally rethinks the underlying paradigms of education. The doctoral programme comprises 18 ECTS credits and includes theoretical and methodological workshops as well as an annual summer school where doctoral students can present their own projects and discuss them with each other and with invited experts. They also have the opportunity to use the attractive BeLEARN Hub as a place for teaching, working, and researching.
